Some Get It

Naming your GPS has become a fairly common practice – so most passengers – get it immediately and smile.   If I sense that they’re cool with it, I might start embellishing our imaginary companion.  A deadpan delivery is key,

“Vanessa seems tense today.”

“Vanessa isn’t very subtle … but she’s a very special presence in my life.”

“Vanessa has gotten me out of many a jam.  I’m deeply indebted to her for all she adds to my life.”

I have to be relaxed when I deliver the lines. To accept Vanessa’s existence beyond a mere voice emanating from the dashboard requires a comfort level, which requires imagination, creativity and a leap of faith. I have great faith in Vanessa, but not every one of my passengers does.  So not every one has the pleasure of meeting Vanessa.  People are moving targets and sometimes your mind and theirs just fail to connect, they dart from one preoccupation to the next.
